AEO and GEO audit: why AI assistants do not cite you, and what to fix first

An AEO audit measures whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews can reach, read, identify and quote your pages, then ranks the fixes by commercial impact. It starts with the technical and content layers, because most AI visibility failures are crawl, rendering or entity problems that existed before generative search did.

Sounds familiar?

  • Competitors are named in AI answers for your category and you are not
  • ChatGPT describes your company with old positioning, wrong prices or a competitor's facts
  • Search Console shows impressions holding while clicks fall, with rankings unchanged
  • Your site is a JavaScript application and nobody has checked what a non-rendering crawler receives
  • You have been sold an AEO retainer and want an independent baseline before signing

What we fix and deliver

  • Rendering and access check per template: what GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended actually receive, including IP-level blocks a browser never sees
  • Server log analysis of AI crawler behaviour where logs are available
  • Entity audit: how consistently your organisation, products and people are stated across your site, structured data and third-party sources
  • Passage-level content review: whether your answers survive being pulled out of the page
  • Retrieval testing against a fixed set of buyer prompts across several assistants, repeated and reported as a distribution, never as a single screenshot
  • A prioritised fix list with the evidence attached to each item, written so your developers can work from it directly
  • A deployable robots.txt and llms.txt where they are part of the fix

How it runs

Fixed scope and fixed fee, set by the number of distinct templates, markets and languages rather than by URL count. Typical delivery is one to three weeks. How pricing works.

  1. Access and baselineSearch Console, analytics and log access, plus the prompt set agreed with you. The AI visibility baseline is recorded before anything changes, because it cannot be recreated later.
  2. Technical layerRaw HTML per template, rendering parity, status codes by user agent, robots and crawl paths.
  3. Content and entity layersExtractability, internal contradictions, structured data, and how the brand is described off-site.
  4. Retrieval testingRepeated prompts across assistants, reported as citation frequency with the sources each assistant used instead of you.
  5. Report and walkthroughFindings ranked by commercial impact, a fix file for the developers, and a call to go through it.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between an AEO audit and a GEO audit?

In practice they cover the same ground. AEO (answer engine optimisation) and GEO (generative engine optimisation) both describe getting cited inside AI-generated answers. This audit covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews under one scope.

Can you guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend us after the fixes?

No, and nobody can. AI answers are probabilistic and outside any vendor's control. What the audit does is remove the reasons you cannot be cited, then measure citation frequency against a recorded baseline so you can see whether it moves.

Do we need an SEO audit first?

No. The AEO audit includes the technical and content layers underneath it, because those are where most AI visibility problems start. A separate technical SEO audit makes sense when the site has large-scale crawl or indexing issues.

What access do you need?

Search Console and analytics read access, a list of your main templates, and server logs if you can export them. Logs are optional but show exactly which AI crawlers reach which pages.
